Scams & deception

AI can make a scam look more convincing. The checks still matter.

Voice

Impersonation calls

A familiar-sounding voice is not proof of identity. End the call and make contact independently using a trusted number.

Video

Deepfake video

Do not rely on visual appearance alone where money, access or sensitive information is requested.

Messages

AI-written phishing

Good spelling no longer makes an unexpected message trustworthy. Check the sender, destination and request itself.

If you suspect a scam

  1. Stop the interaction and do not send money or credentials.
  2. Verify the person or organisation through an independent route.
  3. If you have exposed an account, contact the relevant bank or provider promptly.
  4. Preserve relevant messages, numbers or transaction details.
  5. Use the appropriate official UK reporting route.
